Microhabitat Selection by Small Mammals
نویسنده
چکیده
Habitat selection is the process by which individuals choose among available habitat patches. Habitat availability” as how accessible and procurable physical and biological components of a habitat are to animals. Research on small mammal habitat use helps to broaden their knowledge. Small mammals are often used as an indicator species group to reflect some aspects of “integrity. Small mammal abundances are affected by both macro-and micro-habitat structures. Studies on patterns of habitat use by mammals are important for understanding the mechanisms involved in their distribution and abundance. This paper provided a brief critical review on the microhabitat selection by rodents. Reviewing literature, it is found that approximately most of researchers have been mentioned that microhabitat features such as food availability, predation risk, temperature, status of moonlight... are important in determining the variety and abundance of small mammals.

Effect of Downed Woody Debris on Small Mammal Anti-Predator Behavior
The threat of predation is often the largest cost associated with foraging (Brown & Kotler 2004; Preisser et al. 2005; Creel & Christianson 2008). Foragers primarily assess the threat of predation based on indirect cues of risk, such as microhabitat features and environmental conditions (Orrock et al. 2004; Verdolin 2006). For example, small mammals often respond to the threat of predation by b...
متن کاملMicrohabitat of small mammals at ground and understorey levels in a deciduous, southern Atlantic forest.
Each animal species selects specific microhabitats for protection, foraging, or micro-climate. To understand the distribution patterns of small mammals on the ground and in the understorey, we investigated the use of microhabitats by small mammals in a deciduous forest of southern Brazil. Ten trap stations with seven capture points were used to sample the following microhabitats: liana, fallen ...
متن کاملA device and standard variables to describe microhabitat structure of small mammals based on plant cover.
Studies quantifying habitat structure generally use several instruments. This paper aims to propose a new and efficient device to characterize microhabitat structure of small mammals. Seven measurements were taken: plant cover, litter cover, rock cover, canopy cover, and vegetative obstruction at three heights. The device is a 0.25 m2 square wooden frame (0.50 m x 0.50 m) divided in to 100 open...
متن کاملMicrohabitat Conditions in Wyoming’s Sage-Grouse Core Areas: Effects on Nest Site Selection and Success
The purpose of our study was to identify microhabitat characteristics of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) nest site selection and survival to determine the quality of sage-grouse habitat in 5 regions of central and southwest Wyoming associated with Wyoming's Core Area Policy. Wyoming's Core Area Policy was enacted in 2008 to reduce human disturbance near the greatest densities of...
متن کاملAre Microhabitat Preferences of Coexisting Species Under Selection and Adaptive?
Microhabitat preferences are assumed to be adaptive, suggesting that fitness is higher in preferred microhabitats and potentially reflecting natural selection on habitat choices. I examined microhabitat preferences and adaptiveness of preferences for seven bird species coexisting in high elevation snowmelt drainages based on study of microhabitat and survival of 1556 nests. Habitat features in ...
